FROM THE BEGINNING

The first club chairman was Fr Pat O'Connor. Other committee members were Tom O'Leary, Timmy Fitzpatrick and Michael Moroney a Teacher in Clonigulane school. They organised training on the Sundays at Mrs. Killoury's field in Clonakilla. The first event for the new club was the Clare Junior cross country Championship at Inagh on February 1st 1942. Kilmihil finished third. The team was , Tom O'Leary and Mickey Daly, Cahircanivan, Johnny Collins, Knockerra, Miceal Conway, Clonina, Joe Cussen, Shyan, Paddy Crowley, Leitrim.

On 15th August 1942 Patrick O'Dea from Lissycasey won the national 5 mile championship at the Showground's in Ennis  

1942/43

Willy Carey from Moyasta won the Clare Novice in Kilnamona. Kilmihil came 3rd in the Junior with Tom O'Leary, Miceal Conway, Mickey Daly, Bart Crowley, Leitrim, Jack Reidy, Tullagower and John O'Gorman, Gower.  In the All Ireland Junior Willy Carey finished third. Patrick O'Dea, Retained his 5 mile championship.

1943/44

The Club won their first championship , the County Novice at Clarecastle with 1. Patrick O'Dea,2. Jack Murphy, Leadmore,  3. Tom O'Leary, 7 Joe McGrath, Gower, 14. Johnnie Collins, 15. Bart Crowley. Victory in the Junior followed led by Patrick O'Dea in 1st place. Patrick was 2nd in the Clare Senior with Kilmihil also 2nd.  

1944/48

Willie Carey won the Clare junior in Dromoland. Kilmihil finished runners-up with Joe McGrath, Kevin O'Gorman and Michael Murphy.

After the war there was severe emigration and Kilmihil suffered as well. Patrick O'Dea to England and Willy Carey to USA were some of the big losses. For a few years the club barely kept alive. But an revival began in 1948/49 At the AGM the Officers elected were

THE 1950'S

Local trials were held and a set of white singlets were purchased and then dyed red. These were the first club colours. The Novice was held at Inagh on 22nd January 1950. Kilmihil won from St. Michael's of Ennis. The scoring team were 2. Gerry Considine, Knockalough, 3. Michael Hassett, Shyan, 4. John Coughlan, Greygrove, 4. John McMahon, Gower, 13. Jimmy Corry, Alva and 17. Brian Lernihan, Kilmihil. The individual winner was Paddy O'Malley who also won the junior and senior crowns that year, the first man ever to do so. Kilmihil took the junior honours with 2.  Michael Hassett, 3.  Gerry Considine, 6. John Walsh, Knockerra, 8. John Coughlan, 16. Paddy O'Donnell, Derrycrissane, and 17. Brian Lernihan.  The same team was 2nd in the senior.  

Having won novice and junior the previous year the club had to find new teams for the 50/51 season. A very good 2nd place was earned in the novice with Martin Crowley, Gowerhass, Morgan Walsh, Martin Gallagher, Thomas and P. J. Murphy, Knockerra. They also finished runners-up in the junior but the highlight of that year was the winning of the club's first senior title. It was run on Easter Sunday 25th March 1951 in Kilmihil. The team was 2, Gerry Considine, 3, Martin Crowley, 4. Tim Shannon, Kilrush, 9. Morgan Walsh, 10. Brian Lernihan, 11, John McMahon.

51/52

 The novice was again won with a new team. 4, Stephen Grogan, 9, Martin Gallagher 11.  Michael Browne and 27. Charlie Clancy all from Knockerra, 6.  Willie McMahon, Kilmurry McMahon, 7.  John O'Neill, Labasheeda. They were runners up to St. Michael's in Junior but retained the Senior with Morgan Walsh becoming the first clubman to take the senior individual title.  The team was 1, Morgan Walsh, 2, Gerry Considine, 4. Stephen Grogan, 5. Martin Gallagher, 9 Willie McMahon and 20. Jimmy Corry from Alva, Cooraclare. In that season also the club finished third in the All Ireland Junior Championship. Clare won the Munster junior title with 5 club members on the team, Morgan Walsh, Gerry Considine, Willie McMahon, Martin Gallagher, and Stephen   Grogan.

In the following season 52/53 the athletes from Knockerra decided to form their own Club, St. Imy's and so the club lost the services of some great runners and we had no success this year.  However Clare won the National junior title in Dublin. Paddy O'Malley, St. Michael's was the individual winner and the other scoring members were, 4.  Christy Hurley, St. Michael's, 8. Stephen Grogan, 10. John Minogue, Tulla, 30. Gerry Considine, and 44. Noel Comyns, Bealaha. This was the first arrival of Tulla Club and they promptly won their first Clare senior. Youths (under 18) was added to competitions for the first time that year.

Down through the years club members also took part in track and cycle races. In cycling there were John and Kevin O'Gorman and P. J.  Neenan, John Pyne was the star exponent of long, high and triple jumps along with Michael O'Dea, Killimer while Johnno Finucane , John T Reidy, Paddy O'Donnell all starred on the track.

53/54

Once again the club won the Novice Championship with 2. John O'Gorman, Greygrove, 3.   Michael Dooley, Kiltumper, 7.  Pakie Browne, Dromelihy, 12. Kieran Devine, Lack West, Murty Harvey, Brisla and Tommy Garry, Dromelihy.

1954/55: At the AGM the following were elected, President: Patrick McMahon, Chairman: Mick Quinlivan, Secretary: Gerry Considine, Treasurer: James Lernihan. St. Mary's were formed this season.

In this season we were runners up in Novice and Youths Championships. The Youths team, was Pato Meade, Crag, Billy Murrihy, Clonreddan, Sean and Jimmy Griffin, Glenmore. John Pyne was second in Munster and national Triple jump.

1995/96

Plunkett Sexton, Mullagh won the Novice and Pato Meade was 3rd. The club finished third and the same in Junior.  Sean Griffin was on the Clare youths which finished 3rd in the National championship.

1956/57

The youths title came to the club for the first time with 3.  Dan O'Halloran, Ballydineen, 6. Sean Quinlivan, Cahircanivan, 10. Thomas Normoyle, Kilbridget and 12. Tommy King, Glenmore. The Novice and junior were run together in Clonbony. These races saw the first introduction of the great Paddy Considine, Ballydineen. He finished 2nd in both races and John O'Gorman, Greygrove was 3rd. Kilmihil finished runners-up in the junior. Tulla won the senior for the fifth year in a row with Kilmihil 3rd . Noel Comyns of Bealaha (who later joined Kilmihil) was the individual winner with Paddy Considine 2nd.    

1957/58

The Novice was held in Killaloe and a narrow victory for the club over a new club, Cross. the team was 2.  Sean Quinlivan, 4.  Dan O'Halloran, 9. Paddy Nugent, Killimer, 12. Paddy Behan, Killimer, 15. Tommy King, 17. Michael Garry, Ballynacally. The same two teams battled for the junior with Kilmihil again coming out on top. There was also a special race to select a Clare team and  Paddy Considine won from Seamas Conlon, Marian. The Munster Novice was run in Rathkeale and to the great delight of the large Clare crowd Paddy Considine took the individual title, the first of many, and led Clare to 3rd place.

The youths was held in Tulla and was won by John Danagher with Tommy McCarthy then running for Kilmihil in runners up spot. Kilmihil finished 2nd with 8.  Tom Lillis, Lisnaligane, 9.  Bernie Considine, Ballydineen and Matt Fitzpatrick, Ballykett, Kilrush.  The senior was run in Drumcliffe on St. Patrick's Day 1958 and Kilmihil at last ended Tulla's great run. With all six scoring men in the first eleven places Paddy Considine won the first of his senior titles with 2.  Noel Comyns, 7.  Dan O'Halloran, 8.  Paddy Nugent, 10.  Michael Garry and 11, Paddy O'Donnell. In the National Youths in Athenry, Clare were 2nd with Tommy McCarthy in 19th place. 

1958/59

At the Clare convention Patrick McMahon, one of the clubs founder members was elected honorary vice-president of the County Board. New teams  had to be got for the Novice and junior that season. 3rd in the Novice was a great result but no luck in the junior. Paddy Considine won his 2nd senior crown and Kilmihil retained their team title. Dan O'Halloran was runner up with Michael Garry 4th, Noel Comyns, 7th Patrick Behan, 15th and Stephen Clancy, Ballynacally  16th. The 2nd youths title was won in Clarecastle with , 7. Tommy King, 8. Oliver O'Shea, Knockalough, 10. John Joe Halpin, Lissycasey and 12th Matt Fitzpatrick, Ballykett

In Kilmallock on February 15th 1959, Paddy Considine won the Munster Junior with with Dan O'Halloran 3rd led Clare to Victory and on the following Sunday in Athenry he won the National junior title. The following is a report from a national paper "The race consisted of 4 laps of 1.5 miles and when Considine entered the last lap he was fully 70 yards ahead and full of running. He stretched the lead without trying and when he crossed the finishing line to the applause of the of a very big crowd, had at least 150 yards on hand to his nearest rival"

During the summer track championships were held and Paddy won the national 5 mile championship in Glinsk, Co. Galway. This was followed by a victory in the 4 mile championship in the Iveragh Grounds in July. In August he added the 3 mile crown  in Ballinree, Co. Carlow where he won in a time of 14.15 and broke the national record by 5.4 seconds.   In the 2 mile championship at Ballyhooly, Co. Cork he lost the chance of a clean sweep when he was beaten by Tom O'Riordan (now a well known journalist)  who was home on holidays from a Sports scholarship in USA.

1959/60

Oliver O'Shea, Knockalough won the youths championship and with 2nd, John Garry, Ballynacally, 8th Mickey O'Gorman and 10th T. J. Lillis, Clonreddan took the team title or the third time. The Senior was held in Tulla and again Paddy Considine won his 3rd title and led Kilmihil to victory by 2 points over great rivals Tulla.   Dan O'Halloran was again runner-up for the 2nd year and the other members were 6.  Paddy Nugent, 10. Noel Comyns, 15, Tom Lillis and 18. Paddy Behan. in the All-Ireland senior in Mongrel, Paddy Considine was 3rd.  During the summer Paddy retained his 5 mile championship in Holycross, the 4 mile championship in the Iveagh Grounds and the 3 mile  in Ballinree, co Carlow.

1960/61

The Novice was won in Dromoland with 4. Oliver O'Shea, 6. John Garry. 9. Albert Meaney, 10. Cyril Conway, 13. Tommy Meere. 19. Michael Lillis. James Brogan led St . Mary's to a 2 point win over Kilmihil in the Junior. They also won youths when we finished 3rd. Paddy Considine won his 4th senior title with Dan O'Halloran 2nd for the third year in a row but Tulla took the team title. In the all-Ireland senior both Dan and Paddy finished 4th and 5th and so were awarded National Singlets.  In the All-Ireland Youth Clare won the National Title with Paudie Halpin in 18th place.
